Video

Adjust the Video Format

The video format or screen resolution indicates the amount of detail that the picture displays. Resolution is identified by the number of display lines on the screen. The methods that an HDTV uses to "paint" the picture on the screen are referred to as progressive and interlaced.

For example, a resolution of 1080i indicates that the screen shows 1080 horizontal lines in an interlaced display, and 480p indicates that the screens shows 480 horizontal lines in a progressive display.

  • The interlace method involves refreshing pixels in alternation; first the odd lines and then the even lines.
  • With the progressive method, every pixel on the screen is refreshed simultaneously.

To adjust the Video Format:

  1. From the Spectrum Guide Main Menu, use the arrow buttons to select Settings & Support > Preferences > Audio, Video & Display.
  2. Using the arrow buttons, highlight Video and then press OK/Select.
  3. Using the arrow buttons, scroll to Video Format and then press OK/Select.
  4. Select your preferred video format and then press OK/Select.
    • 1080i: Highest pixel count, perfect for fine picture detail on an HD TV.
    • 720p: Seamless refresh, great for fast action and sports on an HD TV.
    • 480p: Seamless refresh, better for sports and fast action on an SD TV.
    • 480i: Highest SD pixel count, fine picture detail on an SD TV.
  5. Highlight Save and then press OK/Select to confirm your changes.
Note: Since the vast majority of programming is currently produced in 720p and 1080i, if your television is enabled with 1080p or 4K technology, your TV will convert our HD signal so you can continue to enjoy Spectrum TV.

Change Picture Format (Aspect Ratio)

There are two common TV screen shapes: the square shape of standard definition (SD) TVs, and the widescreen shape of high definition (HD) TVs. The term used to describe TV screen shape is aspect ratio.

Most SD TVs and a few small-screen HDTVs have a 4:3 aspect ratio. Widescreen HDTVs typically have a 16:9 ratio. TV programming also has either a 4:3 or 16:9 ratio. While most HD shows are in 16:9, some programming is broadcast in 4:3.

A mismatch between your TV ratio and the programming ratio can result in a "pillar boxed" or "letterboxed" picture (black bars) when you watch 4:3 programming on your 16:9 widescreen or vice versa, but you can choose an alternate display.

To set how HD programming displays on your SD TV:

  1. From the Spectrum Guide Main Menu, use the arrow buttons to select Settings & Support > Preferences > Audio, Video & Display.
